Manuel Policarpio de Guzman

Manuel is the eight of the ten children of Lorenzo and Consolation Policarpio de Guzman. Manuel graduated from the Papua Institute of Technology in Manila with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1956. Ho took the government board examination in 1957 and passed. Manuel left for the US on August 15, 1958. He arrived in Baltimore, MD and lived with his sister, Benilda and husband Dr. Pedro Matias. While in Baltimore, he worked at the Johns Hopkins Hospital as research assistant to Dr. and Mrs. Harold Harrison.

Manuel encouraged his girlfriend in the Philippines to join him in the US. Helen Llamanzares, a 1956 Commerce graduate from St. Theresa’s College, Manila, and was then working at an American firm, the J. Walter Thompson Co., Manila, agreed to come. She left for the US on September 21, 1961. She went to New York to stay with her friend who worked at the UN. Helen immediately started applying for employment that will extend her Visitor’s visa. On December 1, 1961 she received a call from the Personnel Office of The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Washington, DC. Helen started to work for the World Bank on December 4, 1961.

Manuel and Helen had planned to get married as soon as they were settled in their jobs in the US. They notified their parents at home in the Philippines. Pictured above shows Manuel’s mother, Mrs. Consolacion de Guzman, his brothers, Dr. Rodolfo and Raul de Guzman, and their sister in law, Ate Tinding, wife of Galicano, another brother of Manuel. Also in attendance are Helen’s parents, Atty Teodoro and Mrs. Luz Llamanzares, and Helen’s older sister and brother.

Manuel and Helen were married January 6, 1962 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Baltimore, MD

Manuel and Helen have four children: Lisa, Dan, Manuel Jr., and Gabriel
